Cal Bears' offensive line has strong performance in win over Washington State

BERKELEY -- If this was a dress rehearsal for its Big Game assignment, the Cal offensive line got it right in the Bears' 31-17 victory at Washington State.

Now Cal's big men get the chance to repeat it on the big stage of the 115th meeting with Stanford at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

"It's nice to go in there on a two-game win streak," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said.

The team's most maligned unit much of the season, Cal's offensive line delivered its best performance of the season Saturday night, paving the way for a season-high 318 rushing yards and allowing zero sacks.

"I thought the offensive line really played well," Tedford said after the Bears (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) won their second straight game and moved within a victory of .500 for the season.

No sacks allowed for a team that had surrendered an NCAA-worst 29 through six games? "That's always nice," Tedford said.

No doubt, No. 22 Stanford (4-2, 2-1) will provide a greater challenge than the Cougars (2-5, 0-4).

The Cardinal ranks seventh nationally defending the run, allowing just 89.5 yards per game, and has sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times. Stanford held USC to 26 rushing yards in its 21-14 win last month.

For the second straight week, the key to Cal's offensive efficiency was its ability to stay out of third-and-long situations. The Bears faced 11 plays of third-and-7 or longer in their 27-17 loss to Arizona State two weeks ago, an unacceptable number,

according to Tedford.

In wins over UCLA and WSU, however, the Bears left themselves needing 7 yards or more just four times among their 23 third-down opportunities. They converted 12 of those 23 third downs.

Smart play-calling and generally more solid play from quarterback Zach Maynard contributed to the improvement. So did the evolving offensive line, which has helped Cal rush for 504 yards the past two weeks.

Against the Cougars, the line's push allowed Bears to run the ball on 27 of their 35 first-down plays (not counting a kneel-down to end the game). Nineteen of those 27 plays netted at least 4 yards.

And they spread it around, with four players rushing for at least 59 yards. C.J. Anderson had his second straight 100-yard effort (112) and leads the Bears with 498 yards. Isi Sofele picked up 63 and Brendan Bigelow had 59.

Those three have combined to rush for 1,182 yards on the season, averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

The new twist was that Maynard carried the ball 10 times for a career-high 78 yards, giving defenses one more thing to worry about.

"Him running the ball is definitely going to help us out, especially when it's third down and he can pick up a first down and not have to throw the ball," wide receiver Keenan Allen said.

Allen had a season-best 11 catches for 166 yards, moving past Dameane Douglas to No. 2 on Cal's career list with 196 receptions. He needs just six receptions to match school record-holder Geoff McArthur. The junior wideout is tied for eighth nationally this season with 52 catches.

Cal's defense, after allowing opponents to score 30.2 points per game over the first five weeks, has surrendered just 17 each of the past two.

While WSU attempted 63 passes, the Bears had four sacks, two interceptions and six pass breakups. Cornerback Steve Williams had one pick and four breakups.

Tedford expressed ongoing concern with penalties after the Bears were flagged eight times for 91 yards.

Cal was hit three times for pass interference, twice for roughing the passer and once for a personal foul. The Bears are tied for fourth-worst nationally at 80.7 penalty yards per game.

Endeavour finally reaches permanent LA museum home

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It took much longer than expected, but the Space shuttle Endeavour has finally reached its permanent resting place at a Los Angeles museum.

After a 12-mile journey through city streets that included thousands of adoring onlookers, flashing cameras and even the filming of a TV commercial, Endeavour arrived at the California Science Center Sunday to a greeting party of city leaders and other dignitaries that had expected it many hours earlier.

The Endeavour was still slowly moving toward a hangar on the grounds of the museum mid-Sunday afternoon.

Organizers had planned a slow trip, saying the spacecraft that once orbited at more than 17,000 mph would move at just 2 mph in its final voyage.

But that estimate turned out to be generous, with Endeavour often creeping along at a barely detectable pace when it wasn't at a dead stop due to difficult-to-maneuver obstacles like trees and light posts.

Saturday started off promising, with Endeavour 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

Some 400 trees had been removed to avoid such situations, but officials said most of the trees that gave them trouble could not be cut down because they were old or treasured for other reasons, including some planted in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, several dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But it was a happy, peaceful crowd, with firefighters having only to respond to a sheared hydrant and a small rubbish fire, and no reports of any arrests.

And despite the late problems the mood for most of the day was festive.

Shuttle inches toward retirement home at LA museum - Philippine Star

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working-class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, thousands marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a light post. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Early birds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise to watch Endeavour roll by at a pokey 2 mph. Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, could not miss the moment.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit.

Endeavour had been scheduled to inch into the California Science Center on Saturday evening to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece. But as the night wore on, even inching became a challenge, and the journey looked likely to spill into Sunday.

The second day of the move started off promising, with Endeavour 1? hours ahead of schedule. But hurdles and hiccups caused it to run some five hours behind. There was no major single reason for the slowdown ? it was the accumulation of small problems involving maneuvering and maintenance.

They included a small tree on the narrowest section of the move that planners hadn't thought needed removal but ended up bringing the procession to a stop. As crews tried to find ways to tilt and twist the shuttle past the tree, they came close to deciding to cut it down before Endeavor squeezed through. Another slip-up came when it appeared the shuttle was going to hit a light post, and crews again began plans to remove it as the ship slid through.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, more than two dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But incredibly, given the size of the crowd, police reported no arrests.

Unlike other high-profile events like the Academy Awards or the Rose Parade, the procession was centered in some of the area's most economically downtrodden and troubled places. The shuttle passed several gritty areas and shuttered businesses, and rolled down many streets that were aflame two decades earlier during the 1992 riots brought on by the Rodney King beating.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing" for the community," said Damian Pipkins, a volunteer at Eso Won Books.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. When it reached a freeway overpass that night, it was towed by a truck.

The shuttle made a late-morning pit stop Saturday at the Forum ? former home of the Los Angeles Lakers ? where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. It was late to its second public celebration that included a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle ambled through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides ? a spot that caused some delay.

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

Others thought it was a decent trade.

"If you have to go through a little bit of pain to have something nice for the community, then it's worth it," said Pamela Tucker, who lives a block away from Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek, like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

There were consequences. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Russia's Lavrov says "reset" with U.S. cannot last forever

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia and the United States must do more to strengthen relations because the "reset" in ties cannot continue forever, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview published on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama called for the reset in ties before taking office in 2008 but relations have been strained by differences over issues such as missile defense, human rights and the conflict in Syria.

"If we talk about the 'reset', it is clear that, using computer terminology, it cannot last forever. Otherwise it would not be a 'reset' but a program failure," Lavrov told the Kommersant business daily.

"Instead of dwelling on the name of this or that stage, we should think about how to develop our relations. Or, again using computer specialists' terminology, we should update the software."

Lavrov said deepening economic cooperation would help improve ties between the former Cold War enemies but that some moves would have to wait until after the U.S. presidential election next month.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney has accused Obama of being soft on Moscow during his four-year term and described Russia as the United States' "number one geopolitical foe".

The jailing of three women from the Pussy Riot punk band for two years in August over a profane "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in a Russian Orthodox cathedral also prompted criticism from Washington.

Lavrov said there was a distorted image of Russia in the West and dismissed suggestions the verdict was politically motivated or that it amounted to pressure on the opposition.

He reiterated that Russia would not back efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad to end the conflict in Syria, saying this would be "incitement to fratricidal war" that put at risk hundreds of thousands of lives.
