Di Vaio, Arnaud lead Impact past Red Bulls

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:06 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

MONTREAL (AP) -Marco Di Vaio got his first MLS goal early in the second half and Davy Arnaud scored two minutes later to lead the Montreal Impact to a 3-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night.

Sanna Nyassi also scored for Montreal (8-13-3), which had lost its first two meetings with the Red Bulls.

Thierry Henry scored his 11th of the season in the 57th minute for New York (11-6-5).

Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta made his MLS debut for the Impact and received a rousing ovation when he touched the ball for the first time. The 36-year-old didn't disappoint as he took charge of the defense while shadowing New York's Henry.

Nesta's debut drew 19,441 for Saputo Stadium's first sellout since the expanded stadium reopened in June.

Di Vaio got the Impact on the scoreboard in the 48th minute, scoring in his eighth MLS match. Felipe Martins, who had three assists, slid a pass to Justin Mapp, who slipped the ball to Di Vaio on the left side, giving the veteran time to tee up and fire a low shot past Bill Gaudette for the opening goal.

Arnaud made it 2-0 in the 50th as Martins send Arnaud in alone to score on a low shot.

Henry eluded Nesta with the Impact calling for an offside call and got the ball alone on the right side to flip over Donovan Ricketts.

Nyassi sealed the win with his fourth goal in the 75th minute after he took a pass from DiVaio and converted from the left side.

Both teams had chances in the first half. Ricketts bobbled Henry's free kick and saw Markus Holgersson shoot the rebound over the bar in the 12th minute.

Gaudette, who played for Montreal in the NASL last season, stopped Mapp in alone and later blocked a point blank attempt from Arnaud.

The best chance went to New York's scoring ace Kenny Cooper, who forced Ricketts into a diving save off a corner kick in the 34th minute.

New York's Dax McCarty received his fifth yellow card and will sit out the Red Bulls' next match at Houston.

Lochte wins 400 IM in blowout; Phelps finishes 4th

(AP) ? Ryan Lochte turned his much-anticipated duel with Michael Phelps into a blowout, pulling away to win the Olympic 400-meter individual medley by more than 3 seconds Saturday night. Even more stunning: Phelps didn't win any medal at all.

After barely qualifying for the evening final in a performance that hinted at trouble ahead, Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish and was denied his 17th career Olympic medal. When it was done, he could barely pull himself out of the pool.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Brazil's Thiago Pereira took the silver, and Japan's Kosuke Hagino claimed the bronze ? beating Phelps by a fairly comfortable 34-hundredths of a second for the last spot on the podium.

It was the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games, when Phelps was a 15-year-old unknown who qualified in just one event, that he didn't win at least a bronze in an Olympic race. Since then, he was 16-of-16 ? 14 golds and two bronzes.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about a fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But this was shocking, totally out of character for a swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

Phelps' close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this.

"I was lucky to get in," he added, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

About a half-hour after the race, the laid-back Floridian returned to the medal podium to receive the fourth gold medal of his career.

Phelps was nowhere to be found.

Draghi sends strong signal that ECB will act

LONDON (Reuters) - European Central Bank President Mario Draghi pledged on Thursday to do whatever was necessary to protect the euro zone from collapse, sending a strong signal that inflated Spanish and Italian borrowing costs were in his sights.

Fears about the euro zone's future are intensifying with Spain and Italy facing frenzied pressure on financial markets and Greece holding crunch meetings with its international lenders having failed to keep its repair plans on track, raising fresh questions about its place in the currency bloc.

With the need for urgent action becoming increasingly apparent, the ECB appears to be gearing up to flex its muscles, something Madrid and Rome have been seeking for months.

"Within our mandate, the ECB is ready to do whatever it takes to preserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough," Draghi told an investment conference in London to mark the beginning of the Olympics.

"To the extent that the size of the sovereign premia (borrowing costs) hamper the functioning of the monetary policy transmission channels, they come within our mandate," he said.

The ECB has cut interest rates to record lows and offered banks unlimited liquidity without any meaningful boost to the euro zone economy or bank lending resulting.

The comments are Draghi's boldest to date and suggest the central bank is ready to defend Italy and Spain whose borrowing costs have hit unsustainable levels.

Winding up his remarks to an audience of business leaders, he said: "I think I will stop here. I think my assessment was candid and frank enough."

The euro jumped above $1.23 for the first time in two weeks after his remarks, Spanish and Italian bond yields fell sharply and the index of leading European shares jumped more than two percent.

After defending Italy last year, the ECB has kept its sovereign bond-buying program mothballed for months. Internal opposition to reviving it is stiff so focus will turn to what else the ECB could do following Draghi's remarks.

Economists think despite the reservations it could be forced to buy bonds again, or support struggling euro zone countries via the back door.

On Wednesday, ECB policymaker Ewald Nowotny broke ranks with his colleagues, saying that giving Europe's permanent rescue fund a banking license so that it could drawn on central bank funds had merits. Draghi and others have previously rejected that option.

Alternatively, the bank could act as the Federal Reserve and Bank of England have, and opt for straight quantitative easing -- money-printing by another name.

"The comments about high government bond yields disrupting ECB monetary policy transmission are interesting, in so far as they hint at a possible attempt to circumvent the restrictions on outright government bond purchases," said Marc Ostwald, Strategist at Monument Securities.

"Of course it remains to be see whether Herr Weidmann, Herr Asmussen, Frau Merkel and Herr Schaeuble would agree with his assessment," he said, referring to the senior members of the German government and its representatives at the ECB.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said Draghi's remarks on government bond yields were "very positive", adding that the euro zone should also not ignore the option to use its EFSF bailout fund to buy bonds.

The IMF also gave its approval. "Draghi's remarks are a welcome reiteration of the ECB's well-known commitment to do what is necessary," a spokesman for the fund told a news briefing.

Euro zone crisis graphics click http://r.reuters.com/hyb65p

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

WORDS OR DEEDS

The ECB rode to the rescue at a previous moment of acute stress in December, launching a program that eventually created more than 1 trillion euros of three-year liquidity for the currency area's cash-strapped banks. That bought three months of market calm which now seems a distant memory.

Its members have been steadily upping their rhetoric in recent weeks as delays in getting the euro zone's bailout fund up and running and Spanish banks recapitalized has pushed the euro zone crisis back to boiling point.

Euro zone powerhouse Germany was put on a rating downgrade warning this week along with fellow AAA members the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Draghi said at the weekend that the ECB had "no taboos" over what it could or could not do. His fears about the failing transmission of record low interest rates and uber-cheap loans into the real economy chime with similar warnings from Bank of France head Christian Noyer.

Draghi's remarks "suggest that he has either convinced the German members of the ECB that it is time to intervene verbally, and if necessary follow through with actual intervention, or he is willing to risk a showdown knowing that a vast majority of the Council will support him," said Riccardo Barbieri, chief European economist at Mizuho International.

A crucial issue for the euro zone is that its bailout fund would not be able to cope with supporting a country as large as Spain or Italy without a major injection of firepower. In the absence of that, the ECB is the only line of defense.

Draghi stressed that the ECB did not want to do things that should be done by governments. He refused to speculate on the chance of a country leaving the euro but said that the single currency was "irreversible".

"Our job is to maintain price stability in the medium-term. Our job is to cope with financial fragmentation, when it falls within our mandate," he added.

Best Baby Shower Gifts that not Everyone Gives

Baby showers are meant to celebrate a new life that is about to come into the world. You should go to that party with a smile on your face and you should look forward to it. Picking out baby shower gifts should not be a chore. Here are some of the best baby shower gifts so you do not have to search far for good ideas.

Boppy

This unique pillow can help the baby sit without the parent, but it also doubles as a nursing pillow. It?s a great way for a mom to free her hands up for a book while the baby is nursing. You could also include a couple of boppy covers in different colors. The boppy is one of the gifts I personally used the most. I had one in every room and even one in my car.

Breast pump

A breast pump is a personal item, but it is something many mothers will use very often. If the mother in question is a close friend or family member, a breast pump makes a great gift. Breast pumps are convenient, inexpensive, and a great way for many moms to get a little time off from feeding the baby, especially in the middle of the night. Before you buy a breast pump, make sure the mom plans to pump and not breastfeed or use formula exclusively.

Baby carrier

There are many wonderful baby carriers on the market and there are also many that hurt mom and dad?s back. Read up on some of the carriers and see what those who have used them say about the style and fit of the carrier. I used a hand me down carrier from my sister and complained each and every time I wore it. I wish I had gotten a nice, comfortable one as one of my baby shower gifts. These carriers can help mom free up her hands at home, but they also are a great way to keep the baby close and comfy when you are out and about.

Diaper genie

Babies go through a lot of diapers and if the new parents have a two story house, it?s not easy to walk all the way down the stairs and to the outside trash bin every time they have to change a diaper in the middle of the night. The diaper genie keeps the nursery odor free and the bags inside are easy to change.

Organic baby bedding

Most baby shower gifts in terms of bedding include blankets. Blankets are wonderful gifts, but they are also quite common. If you give your friend or family member organic baby bedding including sheets, you will be giving a gift that no one else will likely give. It is not easy to pick out sheets that will fit into the decor in the baby?s room. Even if you do not get the exact color or style right, the mother will likely be glad to have an extra set of sheets in the middle of the night when she needs them.

Princess jewelry

If you know the baby is a girl, it can be fun to think of her as a toddler and even older. Most people will only think about the baby and not about the little girl. If you buy her Walt Disney princess jewelry, you are giving her a gift that will last for many years. She will enjoy it as she grows and starts to play dress up and other make believe games.

Martha Marks has a busy sales career, but she always makes time for her children and to give advice to other parents who enjoy finding gifts online. There are so many fantastic online places to shop including?http://www.totalcomfortandjoy.com where you can find beutiful organic bedding for baby.

Some victims, many of them young, are uninsured and face mounting medical expenses.

Children's Hospital Colorado announced Wednesday it would use donations and its charity care fund to cover the medical expenses of the uninsured victims. For those with insurance, the hospital will waive all co-pays.

HealthOne, which owns the Medical Center of Aurora and Swedish Medical Center, also said it will limit or eliminate charges based on the individual circumstances of the patients.

The other two hospitals, Denver Health Medical Center and University of Colorado Hospital, wouldn't directly say what they would do. However, they are the state's top two safety net hospitals and pointed out they provided a combined $750 million in free care last year.

Message in bottle resurfaces after 35 years in Vt.

(AP) ? A long-lost message in a bottle has resurfaced 35 years after a Vermont boy sent it off in a favorite swimming hole.

The glass bottle with a note was found recently near the Bellows Falls dam by 14-year-old Justin Shepard. It was missing its cork, but there was still enough information inside it to track down the writer, Sean Keown (COW'-un).

Years ago, Keown and a pal shipped bottles containing notes down the White River in Rochester, about 75 miles away.

Keown tells WCAX-TV (http://bit.ly/NT8tM1) he had no idea he would get it back.

The old note promised a reward for the bottle's finder. Keown said at the time, he was in elementary school and was thinking maybe a candy bar or soda. He thinks now it will be cash.

Health Tips for Kids to prevent from Asthma

HealthNFitness Tips: When the weather heats up and ozone infiltrates the air, kids with asthma should limit their time outside.

HealthNFitness Tips for the parents of asthmatic children when the air quality is poor:

  • Run the air conditioner, and don't let your child spend too much time outside.
  • If your kids participate in outdoor activities, limit them to the early morning hours and away from high-traffic areas.
  • Talk to your child's sports coach about practicing in an indoor, air conditioned environment on very hot days. Send your child to practice with a rescue inhaler, just in case.
  • Ensure that your home is well-ventilated, use an air purifier and avoid wood-burning fires inside the home.
  • Discuss your child's asthma action plan with the pediatrician.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Amid ongoing legal issues, a recent car crash and run-in with paramedics, Lindsay Lohan has secured her next movie role.

Producer Braxton Pope says Lohan will star in "The Canyons," a film by "Less Than Zero" author Bret Easton Ellis about sex and ambition among 20-somethings in Los Angeles. Paul Schrader, who wrote "Taxi Driver" and directed "American Gigolo," is set to direct the film.

Lohan's publicist, Steve Honig, confirmed Wednesday that the 26-year-old actress had been cast in "The Canyons" and added that she has been on set since last week.

"A big part of the reason she did this was because of Paul Schrader and the opportunity to work with such an iconic filmmaker," Honig said.

Lohan recently completed work on the Lifetime movie "Liz & Dick," in which she played Elizabeth Taylor. During that production, she crashed her Porsche into a dump truck and a week later was treated by paramedics for exhaustion and dehydration. Police haven't released their findings in the June 8 car crash, and no charges have been filed.

Last week, Lohan's attorneys confirmed that she has resolved a case filed by three men she took on a high-speed ride that resulted in her second driving under the influence arrest in 2007.

Lohan remains on informal probation for taking a necklace last year from a jewelry store without permission. She is not required to check in with a judge or probation officer, but could face a jail term if she is re-arrested.

In "The Canyons," Lohan plays opposite James Deen, who is best known as an adult film star with thousands of movies to his credit. Gus Van Sant also has been cast in the film, Pope said.

Schrader describes the characters as "beautiful people doing bad things in nice rooms."

"Lindsay Lohan and James Deen not only have the acting talent," he said, "they also have that screen quality that keeps you watching their every move."

Filming is set to continue next week.

Semenya to Carry South Africa's Flag at Olympics

Caster Semenya will carry South Africa's flag at the opening ceremony of the London Olympics.

Semenya was given the honor Wednesday ahead of double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius.

"It's such a privilege for me to do such a big thing like that," Semenya said in an audio message. "To carry the flag for the team, it's such a big thing."

Swimmer Cameron van der Burgh and long jumper Khotso Mokoena also were considered for the role, the country's Olympic committee said, but Semenya was the "ideal choice."

The 21-year-old Semenya will carry the flag at next Friday's opening ceremony in her first Olympics, three years after she was embroiled in a gender-test controversy that threatened her career and sidelined her from competition for nearly a year.

Semenya accepted the honor in a recorded message played at the announcement of the team's flag bearer in Johannesburg, which also was a farewell function for the team.

The former 800-meter world champion and last year's world silver medalist did not attend the gathering. She was in Monaco ahead of Friday's Diamond League meet, where she will complete her final preparations for her Olympic debut at the London Games.

South African Olympic committee chief executive Tubby Reddy said his body also had considered 400-meter runner Pistorius, who is set to make history as the first amputee runner at the Olympics after being named as a last-minute addition to South Africa's team this month.

Natalie du Toit, an Olympic swimmer who lost her left leg in a motor scooter accident, carried South Africa's flag at the 2008 Beijing Games and that year's Paralympics.

Van der Burgh, a world champion breaststroke swimmer, and 2008 Olympic silver medalist long jumper Mokoena also were in contention to carry the flag in London, Reddy said.

"Look, there were a few athletes in the reckoning, we just felt that Caster would be the ideal choice," Reddy said. "She's been a world champion and we expect her to win the gold medal. She was very excited and surprised.

"If we chose Oscar and not Caster, there would have been other theories. I think we're blessed to have so many icons."

Semenya underwent controversial gender tests in 2009 as she exploded onto the international scene as an 18-year-old by winning the world title at the worlds in Berlin.

She was sidelined for 11 months while the IAAF reviewed those tests before being cleared to run again in 2010.

Semenya finished second in the 800 at the worlds in South Korea last year despite struggling with injury for most of 2011 and is one of her country's top medal hopes in London alongside Van der Burgh and fellow swimmer Chad le Clos.

Microsoft's reportedly working on Office 2011 for Mac SkyDrive update

Microsoft did quite a decent job of keeping us entertained with yesterday's unveiling of its most recent Office package and all of its promising integration with SkyDrive. Still, Redmond left out any mention of how the cloud service would play out for OS X users working on Office 2011 for Mac. Well, according to The Verge, Microsoft's informed the site an update that'd bring some of the features introduced in Office 2013 to the Mac crowd is indeed in the works. The SkyDrive refresh is said to be coming at the same time as the official launch of the 2013 Office bundle, which means you'll have to stick with your current workflow at least for a few more months.

convert crookneck: 5 Tips For Healthier Summer Grilling | Cooking ...

Summer is here and the grilling season is officially upon us. Many of us will be enjoying fun BBQ parties with friends and family all summer long. Before you fire up the grill and enjoy those yummy burgers, hot dogs and steaks, check out these tips to help make your grilling experience a little healthier.

Marinate ? Heterocuclic amines (HCAs) are substances that form when a chemical found in muscle called creatine reacts with amino acids which are the building blocks of protein during high heat grilling and pan frying. Research shows that these compounds increase the risk of certain cancers such as stomach cancer. Marinated meats produce less of these substances. Lemon and vinegar based marinades work well because the acidity prevents HCAs from adhering to the meat. Marinating with fresh or dried herbs such as rosemary, oregano, sage or thyme lowers risk of the cancer causing compounds by up to 90%. Are you a beer drinker? Crack open a bottle, marinating meat in beer can slash the risk by 88%.

Don?t Overcook Your Food ? You can also help counteract the adverse effects of HCAs by not over cooking the meat, frequently turning meat on the grill, cooking at lower temperatures and using smaller cuts of meat.

Be Very Careful With Raw Meat ? Keep food in the refrigerator right up until the time you?re ready to throw it on the grill. Handle raw meats properly, cross contamination is the leading cause of food poisoning. Use different cutting boards for meats and veggies and wash your hands and untensils regularly. Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly to remove pathogens.

Don?t Leave Perishable Foods Out For too Long ? When left out, food can begin to develop harmful bacteria after only 2 hours. Various bacteria can cause food poisoning so put all perishable foods back in the frig within that time frame.

Choose Grass-fed Beef ? It has more omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acid. It?s also lower in fat and calories. It has more nutrients. Studies show that grass-fed meat is 2 to 3 times higher in the cancer-fighting fat CLA, has 60% more omega-3s and 200% more vitamin E. Organic chicken has 28% more omega-3 fatty acids. Organic is the healthiest option. Be sure to use a food thermometer when ever you cook so you can check your meat to make sure your food is cooked to the proper temperatures. Happy grilling!

Save Money With These Great Commercial Real Estate Tips

If you invest in any commercial real estate, you will be able to make a big profit, though you will need to be patient, and do a lot of studying and research. The following article will outline essential knowledge for you to propel your real estate venture to new heights, where you can enjoy a lucrative and interesting career shift.

There are a lot of ways you can spend less when repairing cleaning efforts. The only time you become responsible for cleanup and paying for it is if you actually own interest on a property. If you buy a Superfund site, you might be liable for millions of dollars in cleanup costs. Get a report from an environmental assessment company. Whilst such a report can be expensive, you should view the cost as an investment that could save you a fortune in clean up fees.

When financing for commercial real estate investments, you need to make sure that you have your financial statements on hand. Not having your own financial statements in order will make a poor impression on the bank, possibly making them turn down your loan application.

When purchasing commercial real estate, always keep your goals in mind. Do you want to use the property for your own business or do you want to lease the property? You can save effort and time by defining your commercial property needs before you set out on your search.

If you are new to commercial real estate investing, you should learn how to manage one investment type at a time. Choose one property type you would like to start with and give it your undivided attention. If you try to divide your attention very much, you will not excel in any area.

If you are renting or leasing, pest control is important to look at. Talk about pest control with your agent if the area is known for rodents and bugs.

Don?t choose a real estate broker until you learn about his or her preferred negotiation techniques. Ask them what specific training, expertise and professional experience they might have. You?ll also want an agent that conducts themselves professionally and ethically, and who has expertise in closing beneficial deals. Inquire about any past negotiations, both good and bad, that they can show you.

If you have found the right commercial property for your needs, read the lease in its entirety prior to signing it. There are many dishonest people out there that may add additional covenants into the lease without your knowledge. Thoroughly read the lease prior to signing to ensure there will be no surprises later.

Always be in a position to understand, and move on a deal that is beneficial to you. Real estate professionals have an easier time finding deals. Their usual secret is having an exit strategy that allows them to know just the right moment to turn around and walk out of a deal. They can see when repairs are needed. They are aware of how to calculate how much risks are liable to cost, and they are aware of how to ensure all of the financial goals that are set are met.

The introduction mentioned that no matter what reasons you have for choosing to invest in commercial property, you need knowledge to succeed. Take some of the above tips to heart, and you?ll soon be maximizing your investment profits.

Fruit Noodles aka Froodles! ~ a Raw and Vegan Recipe

serves 2 ~ $2.23 per serving

ingredients
  • 1 papaya ($1.29)
  • 1 mango ($.88)
  • 1 cucumber ($.31)
  • 1 medium onion ($.10)
  • 1 avocado ($.88)
  • crushed pepper flakes
  • papaya seeds
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice ($.40)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil ($.20)
  • 2 tablespoons agave or date syrup ($.40)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt or to taste
  • pinch cayenne

Who doesn't like making up names for raw recipes? I sure enjoy it ... almost as much as I like fruit noodles. Froodles were inevitable.

Peel and then shave, grate or cut the papaya, mango and cucumber into small, noodle like strips and arrange on plates (this is how I cut my noodles). Sprinkle on some finely diced onion , chopped avocado, crushed pepper flakes, and papaya seeds (they have a slightly peppery taste). Then, whisk together the lime juice, olive oil, agave, salt, and cayenne until emulsified. Spoon over the fruit noodles.

Regulation by proteins outside cancer cells points to potential new drug target: Reprogram cancer cells to state of permanent dormancy?

ScienceDaily (July 9, 2012) ? Protein interactions outside breast cancer cells can send signals to the cancer cells to permanently stop proliferating, a new study showed in the School of Medicine at The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio.

"Because this protein cascade is outside the cells, it is likely amenable to therapeutic manipulation," said lead author Yuzuru Shiio, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry at the university's Greehey Children's Cancer Research Institute. "I hope our study will ultimately lead to a therapeutic strategy to reprogram cancer cells to a state of permanent dormancy."

He cautions that the finding was observed in cell cultures and is still far from human cancer therapy. Dr. Shiio is also a member of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at the UT Health Science Center, a National Cancer Institute Designated Cancer Center.

Senescence is poorly understood

Upon successful chemotherapy, cancer cells either die or permanently stop proliferation. The latter phenomenon is called senescence and is poorly understood, Dr. Shiio said.

Using cultured breast cancer cells as a model, the team found that upon chemotherapeutic drug treatment these cells released factors that stop proliferation. By analyzing which proteins are released under this stress, the team discovered that a protein called IGFBP3 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein 3) is a key player in cancer senescence. The team then studied other proteins that work together with IGFBP3 outside of the cancer cells.

Needle in a haystack

Using powerful, large-scale analysis called proteomics, the researchers literally picked out the increased abundance of this one protein, IGFBP3, among a thousand other proteins outside of the cells. It was like finding a proverbial needle in a haystack.
