Israeli naval vessels take control of Gaza boat

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israeli troops on Saturday commandeered a Gaza-bound ship that tried to break through Israel's blockade of the Hamas-ruled seaside strip, the military said. European lawmakers and other pro-Palestinian activists aboard did not resist, and the Finnish-flagged vessel was diverted to an Israeli port.

The trip by the ship, Estelle, marked the latest challenge to the air, land and sea embargo of Gaza that Israel imposed after the Islamic militant Hamas group seized the territory in 2007. Israeli officials say they need to enforce the blockade to prevent weapons smuggling.

Hamas called for more attempts to break the sea blockade.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement praising the military for enforcing the blockade, said there "is no humanitarian crisis in Gaza" and accused the activists of trying to "to provoke and slander Israel's name."

"If human rights were really important to these activists they would have sailed for Syria. We will continue to protect our borders," he said.

Six Israeli naval vessels stopped the Estelle when it was about 30 nautical miles from Gaza, and masked soldiers boarder the ship and ordered it to sail to Israel's Ashdod port, said Victoria Strand, a spokeswoman for the activists.

The Swedish-owned Estelle left Naples, Italy, on Oct. 7 with about 30 people from eight countries, including lawmakers from Norway, Sweden, Greece and Spain, as well as Israeli activists and a 79-year-old former legislator from Canada.

Israeli military spokeswoman Lt. Avital Leibovich accused the activists of staging a provocation.

"We have this blockade because there are constant smuggling attempts of weapons, munitions that eventually reach the hands of terror organizations inside Gaza," she said.

Over the past decade, Gaza militants have fired thousands of rockets and mortar rounds toward Israeli border towns.

Although Hamas and Israel have maintained an unwritten truce for more than two years, violence occasionally flares in the area. Most recently, an Israeli strike on a prominent al-Qaida-inspired jihadi prompted two days of tit-for-tat rocket fire and strikes last week.

Strand, a spokeswoman for the activists, said the takeover of the Estelle by Israeli forces was a "demonstration of ruthlessness."

The ship was carrying cement, basketballs and musical instruments, Strand said. It was emblazoned with "Ship to Gaza" on one side, and also flew the colorful red, green, black and white Palestinian flag.

Israel, aided by Egypt, closed Gaza's borders after Hamas seized control and drove out forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas more than five years ago. Israel eased its restrictions after its raid of a Turkish-led blockade-busting flotilla in 2010 left nine activists dead and sparked international condemnation.

Still, Israel continues to block sea access to Gaza and severely restricts its ability to export goods and import raw materials.

Activists say the blockade amounts to collective punishment of Gaza's 1.6 million residents, denying them the chance to trade and travel freely. Neighboring Egypt continues to impose restrictions at its passenger crossing with Gaza.

The blockade has deepened the hardships in Gaza, where three in four residents rely on U.N. food aid to get by, according to U.N. figures.

"It's hard to imagine what threat one sailboat, loaded with humanitarian supplies and a small number of people, could do to" Israel's mighty military, said Eva Manly, the wife of former Canadian parliamentarian James Manly. She said she lost contact with her 79-year-old husband early Saturday.

Israeli Defense Ministry spokesman Joshua Hantman said the goods onboard would be checked before entering Gaza through the Israeli-controlled land crossing, Kerem Shalom. He said Israel allows some 50,000 tons of goods into Gaza every week. Gaza residents also use dozens of smuggling tunnels linked to neighboring Egypt to bring in contraband goods, particularly construction materials.

Hantman said militants have tried in the past to smuggle weapons into Gaza by sea. In 2011, a vessel carrying 50 tons of weaponry sought to reach Gaza, while in 2009, a boat tried to bring in some 500 tons of weapons, he said.

A Hamas spokesman condemned Israel's actions as "piracy."

"This confirms that the (Israeli) occupation is maintaining its control and isolation of Gaza. There must be more flotillas of solidarity activists to Gaza," said Fawzi Barhoum.

[Windows] Optimize and clean your computer with Advanced - dotTech

Having an system optimization tool that provides more than one service can be very useful in optimizing your system. While there are a number of professional software available that can perform the task very well, Advanced SystemCare can perform some of the most common optimization functions for free... and perform them well.

WHAT IS IT AND WHAT DOES IT DO

?Main Functionality

Advanced SystemCare is an optimization software that can perform a large number of functions to speed up and optimize your system.

Take note Advanced SystemCare comes in two versions -- Free and Pro. We are reviewing the Free version in this article. The download page link at the end of this article takes you to a page that describes the differences between Free and Pro, if you are interested.

Pros

  • Scans your system for presence of malware threat
  • Backs up the system before performing repairs
  • ActiveBoost technology offers real time management of system resources to optimize CPU and RAM usage
  • More than 20 different tools to optimize your system
  • Performance Monitor allows you to track system performance in real time and fix any problems faster
  • Turbo Boost can speed up your system to improve either your work or gaming experience
  • Defragments and fixes any errors in the registry
  • Fairly fast

Cons

  • Large number of tools may be initially confusing
  • Malware scanner isn't as effective as mainstream products
  • Some features are only available in the Pro version

Discussion

Advanced SystemCare is a very useful tool for improving the performance of your system. The program comes as a package of a large number of tools that can scan for malware, defragment your hard drive, defragment the registry, clean junk files, delete privacy traces, and more.

When you first download the program, the large number of options and tools may prove confusing but don't be overwhelmed. To start with, you can take advantage of the Simplified Mode by starting the initial scan. The Smart Scan option in the Simplified Mode provides basic scanning functions such as malware removal, fix registry errors, delete browser history, delete junk files, and provide a small boost to your internet connection.

The Expert Mode is more useful for those who have more knowledge about computers. In this mode the interface is divided into three options:

  • The Care option performs the same Smart Scan as in the Simplified Mode but with some additional functions such as Vulnerability Fix, System Optimization, Disk Scan, and Disk Defragment.
  • The Toolbox tab provides access to a large number of tools that can be used to tune up your system. You can also create a portable version of Advanced SystemCare by clicking on the ASC Portable Version tool. Two of the tools ? Registry Cleaner and Internet Booster ? are only available in the Pro version.
  • The Turbo Boost tab allows you to optimize your system depending on what you want to do. The Work Mode speeds up the system by turning off unnecessary services and applications while the Game Mode can be used to close down those services which you do not need to play games. You can choose which of the System, Non-Windows, and Background applications you want the program to close and thus free up additional memory to improve the system performance.

Conclusion and Download Link

Advanced SystemCare is an excellent tool that provides you with a number of functions that can optimize and clean your system. If you want some more "umph" you can upgrade to the Pro version.

Worker advocates cook up five suits against restaurant group ...

The world?s largest full-service restaurant ownership company faces five separate class-action lawsuits filed by a group that works to protect restaurant workers? rights.

Lawsuits filed by the Mexican-American Legal and Education Fund accuse Darden Restaurants?which owns the Capital Grille, Red Lobster and Olive Garden chains?of violating state and federal labor laws. The suits claim the restaurants regularly ask employees to work off the clock, skip legally required breaks and report to work when sick.

The litigation began as a single class-action lawsuit filed in federal court in Chicago, with state class-action claims covering workers in Illinois, as well as California, Florida, Maryland and New York. Eventually, the lawsuit was severed into five jurisdictions due to the large size of the classes and the complexity of the various state claims. Five regional U.S. District Courts will hear the cases.

The lawsuits were initiated by the Restaurant Opportunities Cen??ters United, which seeks to improve wages and working conditions for low-wage restaurant workers.

Obama lands punches in rematch with Romney

Obama and Romney, talking over each other. (John Moore/Getty Images)

A much more aggressive President Barack Obama showed up to the second presidential debate Tuesday, which at times devolved into angry crosstalk with Republican rival Mitt Romney.

President Obama was under pressure to perform dramatically better at this debate?held at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y.?than the one held two weeks ago. Gov. Romney's energetic performance at that first debate quickly boosted him in the polls, with some recent measures showing he and the president in a virtual tie among likely voters.

Romney kept up his Denver demeanor, attacking Obama on his jobs record, failure to pass immigration reform, policies in the Middle East, and other issues. But this time, instead of simply repeating portions of his stump speech, Obama was ready with specific retorts and counter-attacks. The president frequently accused Romney of twisting facts, occasionally interrupting him as he spoke.

At one point, the debate almost became a shouting match over whether President Obama had cut back oil extraction from public lands. Obama repeatedly said Romney was lying about his claim that oil production was down, pointedly saying, "Not true, Governor Romney." (Politifact ranked a similar claim by a conservative super PAC "half true.") Feeling the heat, moderator Candy Crowley took the candidates to another topic.

The 90-minute town hall-style debate got personal at times. Romney took a detour on an answer on immigration reform to address Obama campaign claims that his personal fortune is invested in China and shielded from taxes. "Mr. President, have you looked at your pension?" he asked, implying the president is also unaware of the nature of his investments.?"You know, I don't look at my pension," Obama retorted, adding, "It's not as big as yours so it doesn't take as long."

Obama returned more than once to the topic of Romney's wealth, saying Romney sees nothing unfair about millionaires paying the same tax rate as a nurse or other middle-class worker. Later in the debate, Romney criticized Obama for attending political events so soon after the U.S. ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, was killed, and also said Obama's campaign unfairly painted him as a villain. Obama closed the debate by mentioning Romney's leaked comments that half the country is dependent on government.

Both candidates appeared comfortable with the more intimate town hall-style, during which an audience of 80 undecided voters, handpicked by polling organization Gallup, watched and asked questions. Audience members picked by Crowley asked the candidates about immigration reform, jobs, gun control, the gender pay gap, and other issues. In answer to a question about the economy from college student Jeremy Epstein, Romney said if elected he could guarantee Epstein would find employment when he graduates in 2014 because of his economic policies. "I'm going to make sure you get a job," Romney said. Obama answered a question about the pay gap with a personal story about his mother's struggle to make ends meet while raising two children on her own.

By the end of the debate, Romney spoke for nearly 41 minutes, Obama a little over 44 minutes.

The final debate of the election is Monday in Boca Raton, Florida, and will focus on foreign policy.

Eye-contact detector found in the brain

Why does making direct eye contact with someone give you that feeling of a special connection? Perhaps because it excites newly discovered "eye cells" in the amygdala, the part of the brain that processes emotions and social interactions.

This new type of neuron was discovered in a Rhesus macaque. If humans have these neurons too, it may be that they are impaired in disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, which affect eye contact and social interactions.

Katalin Gothard, a neurophysiologist at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and her team placed seven electrodes in the amygdala of a Rhesus macaque. The electrodes, each one-tenth the thickness of a human hair, allowed them to record activity in individual neurons as the macaque watched a video featuring another macaque. All the while, the team also tracked the macaque's gaze.

Out of the 151 neurons the researchers could distinguish, 23 fired only when the macaque was looking at the eyes of the monkey in the video. Of these neurons, which the team call "eye cells", four fired more when the monkey in the video appeared to be gazing back at the laboratory macaque, as if the two animals were making eye contact.

Tuned by evolution

"These are cells that have been tuned by evolution to look at the eye, and they extract information about who you are, and most importantly, are you making eye contact with me," says Gothard. Other eye cells fired depending on whether the monkey in the video was behaving in a friendly, aggressive or neutral manner, but not in response to eye contact.

Martha Farah, a cognitive neuroscientist at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, who was not involved in the work, says it is a "plausible hypothesis" that humans also have eye cells. "There are a lot of similarities between human and monkey visual systems," she says. "The human brain belongs to a species that is very social and very visual."

Gothard's group is going to investigate whether drugs can enhance the eye cells' activity in monkeys, suggesting possible therapies to treat conditions that involve reduced eye contact and social interactions. "But first we have to know more about them," she says. "We have just discovered their existence."

The team plans to try out the hormone oxytocin, which seems to boost social bonding. Oxytocin nasal spray is already being used as an experimental treatment for autism.

Gothard presented the findings at the Society for Neuroscience conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, this week.

As PC era fades, good times may be - South China Morning Post

As tablets and smartphones draw more and more users away from PCs, Intel Corp is facing some difficult questions.

Intel, the world?s leading chipmaker, is used to being king of the personal computer market, particularly through its historic ?Wintel? alliance with Microsoft Corp, which led to breathtakingly high profit margins and an 80 per cent market share.

But in the fast-growing and cut-throat mobile world, Intel is struggling - its market share is less than 1 per cent of smartphones, trailing Qualcomm Inc, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, ARM Holdings Plc and others.

That leaves some investors, already concerned about a lacklustre global economy, asking if Intel?s invincibility has come to an end, and whether its profit and revenue growth potential may become much more ordinary.

When the company reports third-quarter results on Tuesday, one key figure to watch is gross margin, which analysts forecast at 62 per cent. While that is still the envy of smaller chipmakers, it has been declining from a record 67.5 per cent in late 2010, a trend analysts expect to continue.

?If we?re moving to mobile, which is a low-margin business, it?s difficult to see where the high-margin business is going to be for Intel,? said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of Destination Wealth Management. ?That?s why we own Qualcomm and we don?t own Intel.?

Shares of Intel have fallen about 7 per cent over the past year. Qualcomm, a leader in providing ?logic chips? or processors for tablets, has gained 12 per cent.

The outlook is not all dark for the company. Intel?s highly profitable server chip business, now almost a quarter of revenue, is growing quickly as Internet companies like Google and Amazon.com build more ?cloud? data centers to offer services to consumers using mobile gadgets.

Shipments of cloud servers are expected to grow at an average annual rate of 31 per cent through 2015, much faster than overall server shipments, according to IHS iSuppli.

Pointing to an indirect benefit of mobile computing, Intel estimates that for every 600 new smartphones or 120 new tablets bought by consumers, an additional server is needed.

Still, the 44-year-old founding member of the Silicon Valley technology industry is struggling to find its place in a world moving quickly to mobile gadgets and social networks.

Analysts say emerging markets and business customers will fuel Intel?s growth for the next several years but not at the explosive rates it has often enjoyed in the past.

Intel?s revenue is forecast to be roughly flat this year with 2011 and to grow 4 per cent next year, according to Wall Street estimates compiled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. That compares with 24 per cent annual growth in the past two years.

Many technology pundits have declared the end of the PC era since Apple?s iPad hit the scene in 2010 and kick-started the market for touchscreen tablets.

Intel was slow to recognize how big a threat tablets would become, with executives describing them as complementary to PCs - a view shared by many.

Increasingly, people are changing their tune. Global PC shipments are expected by analysts to decline slightly this year, the first annual drop since 2001.

To inject new life into PCs, Intel has been promoting a new category of thin, ?Ultrabook? laptops with touch screens enabled by Microsoft Windows. But the Ultrabooks launched so far have been criticized as too expensive, and manufacturers have shipped fewer than expected. Intel declined to comment.

That shortfall was underscored when Intel warned in September of weak demand and cut its own forecast for third-quarter revenue by more than even the most pessimistic analysts expected.

The release of Intel?s new Ivy Bridge processor this year was meant to speed up sales of Ultrabooks. But with premium-features like solid-state drives and touch displays, many models went for US$1,000 or more - well above the US$600-US$700 price tag that analysts say is needed to gain traction with consumers.

Pointing to those high prices, IHS iSuppli recently slashed its forecast for 2012 shipments of Ultrabooks from 22 million units to 10.3 million units, with half of those expected in the next three months, coinciding with the launch of Windows 8.

?The only way it?s going to work is if the PC world can achieve better economies of scale and get those prices down,? said Longbow Research analyst Joanne Feeney.

Determined to protect its profit margins, Intel in the past has suggested it will not reduce chip prices to make Ultrabooks more affordable. Intel?s dominance has long allowed it to charge aggressive prices for its processors - unlike many competitors, Intel both designs and manufacturers its own chips.

But even with that advantage, along with technological improvements and growing economies of scale, Intel may be hard pressed to preserve margins as it moves further into mobile, where processors sell for much less, analysts said.

Gross margins on smartphone processors typically work out to 50 per cent, according to D.A. Davidson & Co analyst Aalok Shah.

?We believe the post-PC era has arrived,? Piper Jaffray analyst Gus Richard wrote in a recent note to investors. ?Moreover, US$120 Intel CPUs are being replaced by US$25 ARM-based CPUs as PCs are being cannibalized by tablets.?

To be sure, many analysts say PC sales will pick up once the economy improves. Market research firm IDC said PC shipments fell 8.6 per cent in the third quarter, but it expects annual growth in a range of 6.5 per cent to 7.5 per cent through 2016.

Microsoft also plans to launch a tablet/laptop hybrid using Intel?s processors, aimed at corporate customers looking for a device compatible with business software that does not currently run on the iPad or Android tablets.

If nothing else, Intel?s depressed share price has made investors like Capital Advisors fund manager Channing Smith take a closer look.

?Obviously the stock is extremely cheap and it has a very attractive dividend yield, but there?s a good reason the stock is where it is, and that?s mainly because strategically they?ve really missed out on mobile,? Smith said.

Cal Bears' offensive line has strong performance in win over Washington State

BERKELEY -- If this was a dress rehearsal for its Big Game assignment, the Cal offensive line got it right in the Bears' 31-17 victory at Washington State.

Now Cal's big men get the chance to repeat it on the big stage of the 115th meeting with Stanford at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

"It's nice to go in there on a two-game win streak," Cal coach Jeff Tedford said.

The team's most maligned unit much of the season, Cal's offensive line delivered its best performance of the season Saturday night, paving the way for a season-high 318 rushing yards and allowing zero sacks.

"I thought the offensive line really played well," Tedford said after the Bears (3-4, 2-2 Pac-12) won their second straight game and moved within a victory of .500 for the season.

No sacks allowed for a team that had surrendered an NCAA-worst 29 through six games? "That's always nice," Tedford said.

No doubt, No. 22 Stanford (4-2, 2-1) will provide a greater challenge than the Cougars (2-5, 0-4).

The Cardinal ranks seventh nationally defending the run, allowing just 89.5 yards per game, and has sacked opposing quarterbacks 19 times. Stanford held USC to 26 rushing yards in its 21-14 win last month.

For the second straight week, the key to Cal's offensive efficiency was its ability to stay out of third-and-long situations. The Bears faced 11 plays of third-and-7 or longer in their 27-17 loss to Arizona State two weeks ago, an unacceptable number,

according to Tedford.

In wins over UCLA and WSU, however, the Bears left themselves needing 7 yards or more just four times among their 23 third-down opportunities. They converted 12 of those 23 third downs.

Smart play-calling and generally more solid play from quarterback Zach Maynard contributed to the improvement. So did the evolving offensive line, which has helped Cal rush for 504 yards the past two weeks.

Against the Cougars, the line's push allowed Bears to run the ball on 27 of their 35 first-down plays (not counting a kneel-down to end the game). Nineteen of those 27 plays netted at least 4 yards.

And they spread it around, with four players rushing for at least 59 yards. C.J. Anderson had his second straight 100-yard effort (112) and leads the Bears with 498 yards. Isi Sofele picked up 63 and Brendan Bigelow had 59.

Those three have combined to rush for 1,182 yards on the season, averaging 6.5 yards per carry.

The new twist was that Maynard carried the ball 10 times for a career-high 78 yards, giving defenses one more thing to worry about.

"Him running the ball is definitely going to help us out, especially when it's third down and he can pick up a first down and not have to throw the ball," wide receiver Keenan Allen said.

  • Allen had a season-best 11 catches for 166 yards, moving past Dameane Douglas to No. 2 on Cal's career list with 196 receptions. He needs just six receptions to match school record-holder Geoff McArthur. The junior wideout is tied for eighth nationally this season with 52 catches.
  • Cal's defense, after allowing opponents to score 30.2 points per game over the first five weeks, has surrendered just 17 each of the past two.

While WSU attempted 63 passes, the Bears had four sacks, two interceptions and six pass breakups. Cornerback Steve Williams had one pick and four breakups.

  • Tedford expressed ongoing concern with penalties after the Bears were flagged eight times for 91 yards.

Cal was hit three times for pass interference, twice for roughing the passer and once for a personal foul. The Bears are tied for fourth-worst nationally at 80.7 penalty yards per game.

Endeavour finally reaches permanent LA museum home

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It took much longer than expected, but the Space shuttle Endeavour has finally reached its permanent resting place at a Los Angeles museum.

After a 12-mile journey through city streets that included thousands of adoring onlookers, flashing cameras and even the filming of a TV commercial, Endeavour arrived at the California Science Center Sunday to a greeting party of city leaders and other dignitaries that had expected it many hours earlier.

The Endeavour was still slowly moving toward a hangar on the grounds of the museum mid-Sunday afternoon.

Organizers had planned a slow trip, saying the spacecraft that once orbited at more than 17,000 mph would move at just 2 mph in its final voyage.

But that estimate turned out to be generous, with Endeavour often creeping along at a barely detectable pace when it wasn't at a dead stop due to difficult-to-maneuver obstacles like trees and light posts.

Saturday started off promising, with Endeavour 90 minutes ahead of schedule. But accumulated hurdles and hiccups caused it to run hours behind at day's end.

Some 400 trees had been removed to avoid such situations, but officials said most of the trees that gave them trouble could not be cut down because they were old or treasured for other reasons, including some planted in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, several dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But it was a happy, peaceful crowd, with firefighters having only to respond to a sheared hydrant and a small rubbish fire, and no reports of any arrests.

And despite the late problems the mood for most of the day was festive.

At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards as it inched through working-class streets of southern Los Angeles.

Shuttle inches toward retirement home at LA museum - Philippine Star

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working-class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile course, thousands marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a light post. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Early birds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise to watch Endeavour roll by at a pokey 2 mph. Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, could not miss the moment.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit.

Endeavour had been scheduled to inch into the California Science Center on Saturday evening to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece. But as the night wore on, even inching became a challenge, and the journey looked likely to spill into Sunday.

The second day of the move started off promising, with Endeavour 1? hours ahead of schedule. But hurdles and hiccups caused it to run some five hours behind. There was no major single reason for the slowdown ? it was the accumulation of small problems involving maneuvering and maintenance.

They included a small tree on the narrowest section of the move that planners hadn't thought needed removal but ended up bringing the procession to a stop. As crews tried to find ways to tilt and twist the shuttle past the tree, they came close to deciding to cut it down before Endeavor squeezed through. Another slip-up came when it appeared the shuttle was going to hit a light post, and crews again began plans to remove it as the ship slid through.

The crowd had its problems too. Despite temperatures in the mid-70s, more than two dozen people were treated for heat-related injuries after a long day in the sun, according to fire officials.

But incredibly, given the size of the crowd, police reported no arrests.

Unlike other high-profile events like the Academy Awards or the Rose Parade, the procession was centered in some of the area's most economically downtrodden and troubled places. The shuttle passed several gritty areas and shuttered businesses, and rolled down many streets that were aflame two decades earlier during the 1992 riots brought on by the Rodney King beating.

"Having a shuttle come through this area of high poverty, it can only be a good thing" for the community," said Damian Pipkins, a volunteer at Eso Won Books.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. When it reached a freeway overpass that night, it was towed by a truck.

The shuttle made a late-morning pit stop Saturday at the Forum ? former home of the Los Angeles Lakers ? where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. It was late to its second public celebration that included a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards ? Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle ambled through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides ? a spot that caused some delay.

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

Others thought it was a decent trade.

"If you have to go through a little bit of pain to have something nice for the community, then it's worth it," said Pamela Tucker, who lives a block away from Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek, like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace the lost Challenger. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking ? nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

There were consequences. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily snipped. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Russia's Lavrov says "reset" with U.S. cannot last forever

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia and the United States must do more to strengthen relations because the "reset" in ties cannot continue forever, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview published on Wednesday.

President Barack Obama called for the reset in ties before taking office in 2008 but relations have been strained by differences over issues such as missile defense, human rights and the conflict in Syria.

"If we talk about the 'reset', it is clear that, using computer terminology, it cannot last forever. Otherwise it would not be a 'reset' but a program failure," Lavrov told the Kommersant business daily.

"Instead of dwelling on the name of this or that stage, we should think about how to develop our relations. Or, again using computer specialists' terminology, we should update the software."

Lavrov said deepening economic cooperation would help improve ties between the former Cold War enemies but that some moves would have to wait until after the U.S. presidential election next month.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney has accused Obama of being soft on Moscow during his four-year term and described Russia as the United States' "number one geopolitical foe".

The jailing of three women from the Pussy Riot punk band for two years in August over a profane "punk prayer" against President Vladimir Putin in a Russian Orthodox cathedral also prompted criticism from Washington.

Lavrov said there was a distorted image of Russia in the West and dismissed suggestions the verdict was politically motivated or that it amounted to pressure on the opposition.

He reiterated that Russia would not back efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad to end the conflict in Syria, saying this would be "incitement to fratricidal war" that put at risk hundreds of thousands of lives.
